Respect is to admire, regard, or give recognition to someone we consider very important and special to us. Respect in the Qur’an (Islam) Children come into this world through their parents. Therefore, every child has a father and a mother. In Islam, Allah (SWT) commands Muslims to respect their parents, teachers and elders. Apart from obedience to Allah (SWT) and His Prophets (SAW), obedience and kindness to parents and others who occupy important positions in society are also important. Why we respect our parents 1 Allah (SWT) commands us to respect our parents. 2 We make our parents happy when we respect them, because they care for us. 3 Our parents gave birth to us, so we must respect them. 4 They provide clothes, food and shelter for us; therefore, we need to assist them always. 5 They pay our school fees, to enable us to get educated and become responsible children. 6 Respecting our parents is our own way of thanking them, even though we cannot completely repay what they do for us. Therefore we should admire, revere and honour them. Why we respect our teachers We should respect our teachers for the following reasons. Islam has a high regard for teachers and others who occupy important positions in society. Islam teaches learners to honour and respect their teachers. Teachers are our guardians and spiritual parents in school and other places of learning. They help us to develop our skills, and to know our rights and duties. They train us to become responsible citizens. They teach us spiritual and moral values that help us in the worship of Allah (SWT). They are always interested in our success in this life and in the Hereafter.
